Biography
David is a seasoned engineer with 15 years of managerial experience who has an unusual ability to discern and illustrate patterns among complex relationships. Over the years, he has envisioned and obtained support for major capital projects, for major environmental improvement programs, and for optimization of manufacturing operations and energy use.
David recently left Simpson Paper Company, where, since 1986, he held a series of positions of increasing responsibility and scope, culminating in his selection as the Vice President of Technology in 1995. He managed an operating budget of $5 million and a total of 56 employees in seven locations in four departments. Reorganization and sale of a number of the Companys mills led to the elimination of these departments, reassignment of some staff to the remaining locations, and termination of the rest of the staff.
Most recently, he has been the Environmental and Technical Manager, assisting the Company in the disposition of the two more mills to new owners and wind-down of the Paper Company. Prior to the sale of one of these integrated pulp and paper mills, he applied data evaluation techniques that led to understanding of the relationships among process variables in three separate departments. These analyses resolved the causes for major process upsets and production/quality constraints. The insights were partially responsible for a coated fine paper machine increasing production by 25%, achieving record production rates since the rebuild of the machine in 1990.
As Director of Environmental Protection at Simpson from 1989 to 1995, he succeeded, after three years of effort, in gaining approval of a corporate environmental audit function. The audits were led by the corporate staff that reported to David, with the assistance of mill environmental personnel. The first round of audits identified over 300 exceptions to procedural or regulatory requirements. Within four years, the number of unresolved exceptions was reduced by 97%. No serious new compliance issues at any manufacturing location occurred during his tenure as head of the corporate environmental department.
Prior to joining Simpson, David was the Engineering Services Manager at the Wallula Mill of Boise Cascade Corporation. There, he conceived and initiated a mill-wide, $14 million, process control project that was, at the time, the largest capital project ever approved by the Board of Directors for implementation by a mill staff group.
David is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where he received a degree, in Chemical Engineering, with honors. He received a Masters of Engineering from the University of Washington in Environmental Engineering. He lives with his wife Anne in Issaquah, Washington. They have two adult daughters. He is an avid runner and accomplished woodturner, selling his work at several juried shows annually.
