Larry Tantalo is an accomplished engineering process engineer and project manager with over 26 years experience is the implementation of capital projects. This experience covers a wide range of technologies and includes experience from the perspective of the owner, consulting engineer and equipment supplier.
Larry is an experienced process engineer with world class knowledge of all mechanical pulping processes. This includes experience with TMP and CTMP installations for modern production facilities. This also includes lesser know areas of groundwood plant operation and optimization, chemi-mechanical process such as NSSC and CMP.
As well as plant and equipment design, Larry has had considerable experience in troubleshooting and optimization of production systems. This includes systems producing newsprint, market CTMP and kraft pulp.
Larry’s experience covers the installation of heavy industrial machinery systems, implementation of water and energy conservation projects and some infrastructure development projects. This includes design and installation of waste sludge handling systems, power generation facilities including fuel handling and papermachine drive systems. Larry has also designed and built three modern woodyard installations producing chips from tree length wood.
He is very experienced in project definition, the management of design engineering and in project implementation. Larry has had project management and cost responsibility both for small projects in the range of $5 to $20 million and for projects as large as $130 million.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, Washington. Project Engineering Manager. Engineering design, major equipment purchasing and overall cost responsibility for a 30 MW steam turbogenerator system. The project scope included the installation of a 30 MW condensing steam turbine, steam supply, condensate handling and utilities systems. The project also included extensive upgrade to the boiler fuel handling systems including wood waste unloading and hogging, storage and recovery systems. Project Responsibility included leading design and equipment procurement and construction support. The project was located in British Columbia and had a total value of $25 million.
Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, Washington. Project Engineering Manager. Engineering design, major equipment purchasing and overall cost responsibility for a Class 100 biotechnology clean room installation. The project included user surveys and plan development, supervising specialist design personnel and hiring the general construction contractor. The project was constructed at the Weyerhaeuser Technology Center in Washington at a total cost of $1 million.
Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, Washington. Project Engineering Manager. Engineering design, major equipment purchasing and overall cost responsibility for a 1.5 million ton per year chip mill. Included scope development, project cost estimating, equipment procurement and design engineering lead. Project scope included two circular log cranes, tree length chipping and barking system and transport conveyors as well as over a mile of new roads, storm water treatment system, offices and maintenance facilities. Project was located in Oklahoma. Total project value was $21 million.
Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, Washington. Project Engineering Manager. Engineering design, major equipment purchasing and overall cost responsibility for an M&D digester replacement project. Two new M&D digesters were installed on a two week mill shutdown replacing 30 year old vessels. Responsibility included scope development, cost estimating, leading engineering design team of 8 engineers, major equipment procurement and construction support. Project was located in British Columbia. Total project value was $6.5 million.
Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, Washington. Project Engineering Manager. Engineering design, major equipment purchasing and overall cost responsibility for a 900,000 ton per year log chipping and barking system. The system included a new long log barking line, chipper, conveyor system, new chip truck dump, auxiliary systems, civil and structural work, process control and electrical engineering. Lead a team of 12 design engineers. Project was located in North Carolina. Total project value $15.3 million.
Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, Washington. Project Engineering Manager. Engineering design, major equipment purchasing and overall cost responsibility for a 70 tpd sludge thickening project. Overall project value was $2 million.
Tacoma Public Utilities, Water Department; Tacoma, Washington. Lead process engineer for a water distribution and conservation study. The scope of the study included a survey of the six major industrial water users (a steam power plant, an oil refinery, a chlor-alkali plant, a gypsum board plant, a lime plant and a food processing plant) on the Tacoma Water system. The study covered sources and uses, water reduction opportunities development, cost estimating and economic analysis.
PISA, Jaguariaiva, Brazil. Process Consultant. Lead a one year process optimization effort to reduce the production costs of a 340,000 ton per year newsprint mill in Brazil. Major efforts involved improving the strength of the mechanical pulp furnish, on site design and construction of equipment to improve chip washing and handling, piping system improvements, papermachine and furnish optimization and monitoring impacts on mill effluent and other utility systems. The result was an approximately $4 million per year savings in production costs.
Pacifica Paper, Inc. Vancouver, British Columbia. Lead Process Engineer; Mechanical Pulping Systems. Responsible for technical review, evaluation and development of strategic plan for the mechanical pulping systems for the Powell River and Port Alberni Newsprint and LWC papermills. The project focused on low capital cost, high return scope development as well as long term strategic direction for the company as a whole.
Rainy River Forest Products, Inc., Steilacoom, Washington. Lead Process Engineer; TMP Energy Reduction Project. Process development, scope definition, and process design for the rebuild of 520 ADMTPD newsprint TMP system. The project objective was to reduce the consumption of the TMP system by approximately 15%, including the reconfiguration of process equipment, application of variable speed drives, and the installation of new TMP refining technology.
West Linn Paper Co, West Linn, Oregon. Project Manager. Scope and estimate for a press section rebuild on a coated free sheet papermachine. Included the use of a rebuilt press section and the evaluation of line shaft drive, vacuum system and other machine auxiliaries.
Rainy River Forest Products, Inc., Steilacoom, Washington. Process Specialist. Energy Audit and survey of a TMP newsprint mill. The project included a review of all pulping systems and equipment, process reviews, and improvements. A plan was developed to save over 40,000 mwh per annum of electrical energy.
Tasman Pulp and Paper, Kaweau, New Zealand. Lead Process Engineer; Mechanical Pulp Upgrade. Process design and financial analysis for a mechanical pulp modernization. This mill operates three newsprint machines that operate on SGW and RMP pulp made from radiata pine. The project scope included: Replacement of a SGW pulp system with a new 450 BDMTPD TMP system; installation of new screening and reject refining for the existing mechanical pulping systems; and extensive white water system changes to reduce the fiber loss and water usage of the mill as well as increasing the mill efficiency.
Tasman Pulp and Paper, Kaweau, New Zealand. Process Specialist. Electrical and thermal energy audit and survey of a three machine newsprint mill and 200,000 TPA kraft mill.
International Paper, Gardnier, Oregon. Study Leader – Toxic Materials Reduction Study. Developed toxics use reduction and hazardous waste reduction plan for the pulp and paperboard mill at Gardiner, Oregon. The plan is designed to phase in reduction strategies over a five-year period under a cost reduction framework.
Boise Cascade Corporation, Steilacoom, Washington. Process Engineer, Yield Improvement Study. Responsible for process engineering on a yield improvement study for a 400 tpd TMP pulp and newsprint mill.
City of Tacoma, Tacoma, Washington. Lead Process Engineer. Responsible for study management and process engineering for a water conservation and reuse program at the Simpson Tacoma Kraft mill.

Process Development and preliminary scope definition for a 600 ADMTPD market BCTMP mill utilizing both hardwood and softwood. The project included product quality estimation, raw material evaluation, preliminary capital estimating, evaluation of effluent impacts, and effluent/water usage minimization.
Avenor, Inc., Dryden, Ontario. Lead Process Engineer; BCTMP System for Uncoated Freesheet. Process design and responsibility for technology evaluation for a new mechanical pulping system. This study was conducted to develop the process and estimate the cost of a hardwood mechanical pulping system to manufacture furnish for two uncoated freesheet machines.
Plum Creek Timber, Columbia Falls, Montana. Project Manager; MDF Upgrade. Project manager for the detailed design of a replacement and upgrade for a medium density fiberboard pulping system. This project involved the addition of two 10,000 HP refiners to an existing mill replacing the existing three smaller refiners.
Weyerhaeuser Paper Company, Longview, Washington. Process Engineer. Responsible for process engineering and design of auxiliary systems for a 25 tpd chlorine dioxide generator in Longview, Washington. This also included development of the Engineers' Report of Emissions and Permitting Assistance.
